SD Gundam Full Color Custom SP

Here's another one of those rather pointless "calamari"-sets that resurrects previously released figures and give them the clear colour treatment. The SD Full Color Custom series was full of these at the end of its lifespan and seems to me more of a way to milk some more money out of old designs than anything.

The first of the SD Full Color Custom SP sets contained ten silver coloured figures and was injected between the 4th and 5th regular set. The clear colour set we look at today is the first of three and was released in June 2008 just after volume 18.

The clear colour figures do not appear to be in very high demand. I picked up a full set from Mandarake last year for only ¥400. However, actually finding a set can be really difficult.

This set recycles the idea from the original SP silver colour release in adding a custom component to each figure. These are not necessarily based in any Gundam lore and can be seen as playability enhancements when putting together your own custom variants. The set contains five different accessories and distribution is fixed with each component being paired with two of the mobile suits in the set as seen above.

01 : GN-001 Gundam Exia (clear green version)

First out is the Exia with its GN Short and Long Blades. Green is an interesting colour choice, normally associated with its companion the Dynames (which shows up as a clear red figure in Full Colour Custom 20 by the way...).

02 : ZGMF-X10A Freedom Gundam (clear blue version)

This version of the Freedom has variable wing positioning, seen here pulling them back and extending the over-the-shoulder Plasma Beam Cannons. This makes the figure so back-heavy that it requires a little stand for the wings.

03 : MSZ-006 Z Gundam (clear red version)

Here we have a fully decked out Zeta with both a beam rifle and saber as well as shield.

04 : MBF-P01-Re2<AMATU> Gundam Astray Gold Frame Amatsu Mina Custom (clear black version)

The jet black Amatsu Mina gets a nice clear black colour figure in this set and is dominated by its huge back mounted energy absorption claw devices.

05 : MBF-P03secondL Gundam Astray Blue Frame Second L (clear blue version)

Continuing with the wild SEED Astray designs we have the Astray Blue Frame with its gigantic ice cream-style sword, can't say I am a huge fan of the overworked designs that came out of this series.

06 : MBF-P02 Astray Red Frame "Powered Red" (clear red version)

The SEED Astray trio is concluded with an Astray Red Frame donning some massive shoulder pads which give the figure quite absurd proportions.

07 : ZGMF-XX09T DOM Trooper (clear red version)

I have to give this set some credit for including a couple of green figures but I think Bandai missed a beat here; allowing the Trooper to go violet would have been much better (and you could have used the same colour for the Perfect Zeong). Still the second of these SP sets offered only red, blue and black figures and that is even duller.

08 : MS-06F Zaku II (clear green version)

After all the overly complex figures in this set it is nice to see a clean and simple figure design. It helps that it looks like some really tasty jelly candy on top.

09 : FA-78-1 Full Armor Gundam (clear blue version)

Here's another questionable colour choice. With so many clear blue and red figures surely the Full Armor figure would have been more interesting in green? I guess we can explain it away with it being the blue version but still... a lost opportunity for some more fun in the SP-line.

10 : MSN-02 Perfect Zeong (clear black version)

Last man out is the Perfect Zeong which has a discrete black colour that fits it better than the garish reds and blues and also helps to bring out the figure's detail.

Well, here you have it folks. Not a terribly interesting set perhaps but hopefully a breakdown that can be of some use to someone out there.
